After a weekend of sunshine, beer and wasps I thought I would round up Sunday with a overdue website update. Above is the recent work I did for the Leicester Food and Drink festival. There is more on its way too, like I always say… i’ve been busy.

Firstly I would like to offer my apologies to the readers of allonethought (there are literally tens of you out there), it has been a bit quiet on here for a while, I would love to say its because I’ve been getting some much needed rest but that would be a massive lie… anyways…

After the unprecedented success of Carousel last year, Philips have teamed up with Ridley Scott Associates to create the next wave of cinematic innovation. Parallel Lines is the brilliant concept set by Philips which, until recently, was shrouded in mystery and intrigue.

All they let on initially was the directors involved and little hints of what was in store. With names like Jake Scott, Greg Fay, Carl Erik Rinsch, Hi-Sim and old tutor of mine Johnny Hardstaff, fans were left salivating like a pavlovian dog spying a pavlova. Writing on the 25th February Hardstaff commented:

“As you already know, all five films are linked, but I cannot say how just yet. What I can tell you about my film is that it’s a thriller. That is a future film noir in a sense, and that there’s a dark secret at its core.”

In the last 12 days Philips have leaked that the release date is 8th April and, more importantly, that the films are linked by all having an identical script. Each director was given said script and allowed to give it there own unique treatment, resulting in 5 hopefully brilliantly diverse films. Below is a still from Hardstaffs thriller ‘DarkRoom’, plus the latest trailer for all you greedy beasts.

No.Zine is an independent arts magazine run by London designer Patrick Fry. The zine features variety of young artists, designers, writers, photographers and illustrators from a wide range of contributers including the allonethought favorite Shaz Madani. From the smattering of images on the No.Zine site one can deduce that this publication is a thoughtfully set slice of fried gold to be found in book shops and art spaces all over London. Although it doesn’t say exactly where, this only lends an air of enigma to proceedings, and if mystery and hunting isn’t your forte you can always purchase online from the No.Zine shop for the very reasonable price of a fiver. I am always one for a good find and seek but I am also slightly lazy when it comes to tubing it around London so therefore will be purchasing online this afternoon.

With an impressive portfolio for some hefty clients, its hard to believe that Shaz Madani only graduated from the London College of Communication in 2008. Working in editorial design, she creates beautiful pieces of print that are well considered and sensitively typeset. I really enjoyed flicking through her work for Topshop this morning and it provided a distraction from my own type based dilemmas (60 articles to fit in a 20 page publication, no one needs that). With media forecasters everywhere saying that print is slowly gravitating towards oblivion, we rely on people like Madani to save us all from iPad induced screen glare comas.

Some great illustrations to come from Fernando Volken Togni. The vectoriffic shapes coming from the designer have been utilised for press, wall and bags. The above image is some recent work he has done for 85Four Agency office wall.

When I first heard the idea of treemixing a few years ago, from the TREE:mix site founder and old studio cohabitant James Robert Fox, I was interested to see what weird organic chains would form from it. For those of you not yet in the loop, treemix is the act of taking an already existing piece of work and putting your own spin on it. The site offers two digital mixes and a scanner mix to get involved with and has already had contributions from some really talented designers and illustrators. The image above is taken from the scanner mix and is the first branch produced by Ben Tallon (who, incidentally, is really work a look). For all those in the ranks who need something to distract them from their good old fashioned work, get yourself on there and download a mix.

Süveyda is the latest offering to come from Ayhan Cebe, the designer and director mainly does work for TV and as some of us know that working with clients can be restrictive at the best of times. Süveyda shows us exactly what Cebe is capable of, the dark haunting short, which has dark tendencies not unlike the work of the much reference Chris Cunningham, is about life cycles, beauty and decay. Taken from his site Cebe says “we know our journey is not random chaos but a journey where every shouting supernova, every trembling cell, returns to the one perfect mystery from which we all come and go”. End result, beautiful darkness.
